Jerome Marcell grew up in pipelining – his father’s pipelining career brought his family from south Louisiana, deep in the heart of Cajun country, to Beirut, Lebanon. Tragedy struck at age 11 when his dad, Roy, was killed while conducting a barge inspection in Cairo, Egypt. Yet there was no doubt in Jerome’s mind that he would follow him into the industry. “I wanted to do it because it’s what he did. He provided real well for my mom and I,” says Jerome, who at age 17 graduated high school on a Friday and started working as a pipeliner three days later. “I thought, ‘If it was good enough for him, it’s good enough for me.’” After an initial displacement during COVID-19, Jerome is proud to continue his 45-year career in pipelining with Workrise.
Kristi Blaser took a different path into the industry. Like Jerome, her dad was also a pipeliner. At just three years old, she would sit on a bulldozer wearing her dad’s hardhat while they ate lunch together. After the COVID-19 pandemic brought talks of lay-offs, Kristi decided to try something new – “I went from a dress job to steel-toed boots, I just wish I would’ve done it sooner,” reflected Kristi. By becoming an environmental inspector, Kirsti got to work with her dad on the same line: “He worked 47 years, and we were able to spend his last year and my first year on the same line. I couldn’t have started in a better position than right beside him.”
